2019 Soaring Summary


The map below shows traces from 69 cross country flights in my ASG29 during 2019, totaling 23,200 miles (37,283 km) and 400 hours, averaging 336 miles (540km) per cross country flight, at an average speed of 58 mph.  The flights spanned most of California, Nevada and Utah,  including crossing over to Oregon and Idaho.  During those trips I visited 20 airports (planned and unplanned).


Highlights from the year:
  • 2nd place in the OLC-USA Champion category
  • 2nd place in the OLC-USA all flights category 
  • 1st place Tehachapi Dust Devil Dash
  • Had 9 flights over 1000km (8 consecutive) The highest I ever done in one season. 
  • Flying for the first time with my 19 years old son Nathan in G103. We flew for 3 hours nearly 130 km XC over San Antonio Valley getting to 9500 feet 
  • More landouts than ever: Tracy (twice), Harris Ranch, Ramona’s ranch (required tractor retrieve from the plowed field), Panoche (planned), Heber City (planned), Panguitch UT, Battle Mountain (planned), Modesto, Reid Hillview, New Jerusalem

2018 Soaring Summary

The map below shows traces from 52 cross country flights in my ASG29, totaling 18,566 miles (29,836 km) and 304 hours, averaging 358 miles (574km) per cross country flight, at an average speed of 61 mph.  The flights spanned most of California, Nevada and Utah,  including crossing over to Oregon, Idaho, Colorado and Wyoming.  During those trips I visited 13 airports (planned and unplanned).


Highlights from the year:

  • 3rd place in the OLC-USA Champion category
  • 3rd place in the OLC-USA all flights category
  • 5th place in the OLC-USA speed category
  • Had 7 flights over 1000km, the highest number of 1000km flights I had in a year (2 from Parowan, 4 from Ely, 1 from Truckee) 
  • Had my fastest year ever: fastest thermal flight averaging 101mph over 1124km, my fastest 2.5 hours segment at 130 mph and my fastest yearly average speed at 61 mph.
  • Had some fantastic flights to San Francisco/Golden Gate Bridge area in wave, to Big Sur coast and Yosemite Valley.

2017 Soaring Summary

The map below shows traces from 56 cross country flights in my ASW27 and ASG29, totaling 20,115 miles (32,187 km) and 339 hours, averaging 359 miles (575km) per cross country flight, at an average speed of 59 mph.  The flights spanned most of California and Nevada,  including visits to Utah, Oregon,Idaho and Montana.  During those trips I visited 11 airports.


Highlights from the year:

  • 2nd place in the OLC-USA all flights category
  • 3rd place in the OLC-USA Champion category
  • 8th place in the OLC-USA speed category
  • Had 5 flights over 1000km (3 from Tonopah, 2 from Ely) 
  • Replaced my ASW27 with a new (to me) ASG 29-18m

2016 Soaring Summary







I had another great soaring year in 2016. While not quite as many flights, hours and total distance as 2015, I did manage to improve my average distance and speed by 5%.  The map below shows traces from 61 cross country flights in my ASW27, totaling 21,886 miles (35,223 km) and 363 hours, averaging 358 miles (577km) per cross country flight, at an average speed of 61 mph.  The flights spanned most of California, Nevada and Utah,  including visits to Oregon, Wyoming and the Grand Canyon - Arizona.  During those trips I visited 13 airports.


Highlights from the year:

  • 1st place in the OLC-USA all flights category
  • 5th place in the OLC-USA Champion category
  • 10th place in the OLC-USA speed category
  • Had my longest Parowan flight (1207km) and my longest Panoche flight (820km)
  • Had fantastic flights from Parowan, Tonopah and Truckee in some of the strongest conditions I remember , including a 1000km flight from Truckee, and multiple flights to Whitney and Shasta.
  • Had 6 flights over 1000km (3 back to back from Tonopah, 2 from Parowan and 1 from Truckee) - my highest number of 1000km flights in one year.
